The Untold Story

While the Lycoming County District Attorney has decided to pursue criminal charges against City of Williamsport Police Officer Jonathan Deprenda of Homicide by Vehicle and Manslaughter, the criminal case may never answer the root question of how a tragic confluence of events caused the death of James Robinson. The criminal case will likely center upon Officer Deprenda's operation of his vehicle at an incredible rate of 88 mph on East Third Street while attempting to overtake vehicles in his path. However, questions related to adequacy of officer training and internal Police Department policies will not likely be part of any prosecution. The central questions to those who want to prevent incidents like this from occurring in the future are: 1) What did Officer Deprenda learn in his training that led him to conlcude that his actions were not incredibly reckless? and 2) If the Police Department had been aware of any previous similar conduct by Officer Deprenda? Remember, that while

this incident was originally characterized as a police pursuit, it really wasn't. It would be better characterized as an officer rushing to the scene of an arrest since by the department's account the perpatrator was already being held at gun point. So pursuit policy is not the real issue, the real issue is much more complex because this is an accident that everyone would agree should have never happened. Police are supposed to protect the general public, not place them in harm's way. Sadly, the untold story of how Officer Deprenda's training and Dpeartment Policies contributed to James Robinson's death may never be known.

Commonwealth v. Candice Steinbacher – Motion for Judgement Acquittal Granted

Motion for Judgment of Acquittal for a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) prosecution was granted by Lycoming County President Judge Nancy L. Butts, after Attorney Kyle Rude argues that the Commonwealth could not prove Ms. Steinbacher was in actual physical control of a motor vehicle. Ms. Steinbacher was arrested after Williamsport City Police believed she switched seats with her boyfriend in order to avoid an arrest for DUI.
