Do injured workers need to see specific doctors in Pennsylvania?

No matter how safe a Pennsylvania workplace tries to be, workplace accidents can happen. In the blink of an eye, a worker can be dealing with serious medical issues. In these cases, it is important that these workers seek medical attention. Without proper medical treatment, workers can face serious long-term damage or even death. Thankfully, workers' compensation often helps to cover the costs of this treatment and any subsequent rehabilitation.

Injured workers may want to see a particular medical professional in these situations. However, they should understand that the Pennsylvania Workers' Compensation Act does give employers some control over who employees can see to treat workplace injuries.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, employers have the ability to designate certain healthcare providers for workplace injuries. Under these guidelines, employers must provide a written notice to employees about these designated providers. This notice must include at least six medical providers, and include their names, phone numbers and addresses. Of the six providers, at least three must be physicians. They must also be geographically accessible to employees.

Employees must be notified of this list when they are hired and anytime changes are made to the list. If the list does not include a necessary and reasonable specialist, then the employee will have the freedom to choose the specialist for the person's care. The employee will also have the power to choose and switch between designated providers. They are also free to choose a provider if employers do not follow these rules. Finally, employers are not allowed to choose a provider for an injured employee.
